DEER PARK, NY — Business education, athletics and instruction were in the spotlight recently in the Deer Park schools.

College Digital Generation students win at Stony Brook

Students enrolled in Deer Park High School’s College Digital Generation course, a business elective taught by Ian Kyranakis, recently wrapped up their semester at Stony Brook University. Each student was an integral part of a group presentation on the stage at the prestigious Charles Wang Center. The presentations included many important aspects of the business education curriculum, including market research, competitive analysis, infographics, newsletters, logos, public service announcements, social media and website design.

Deer Park’s Saawariya Shahriar took first place, Sophia Oltean finished second and Sultan Chattha was given honorable mention designation, earning all three Deer Park students the opportunity to take an April tour of St. John’s Terminal, the new Google headquarters in New York City.

This winter, Deer Park hosted the first annual Western Suffolk BOCES Life Skills Consortium. Special education teachers from across the region gathered in the Deer Park High School library to collaborate and share educational strategies.

“The opportunity to network with teachers who run similar programs in nearby districts was truly enlightening,” Deer Park High School special education teacher Gabriella Gilmartin said. “Exchanging insights, strategies and resources underscored our collective commitment to enhancing opportunities for our students, ensuring they receive a well-rounded education tailored to their future success. A huge shoutout to Mr. DePrima for making this consortium a reality. I can’t wait to collaborate with these amazing educators again soon.”

Seniors Hull and Romero named Suffolk Zone winners

Deer Park High School seniors Kaliyah Hull and Tyler Romero were recently named winners of this year’s Suffolk Zone awards. Hull and Romero are both active members of Deer Park’s sports programs. Romero is the captain of the school’s swimming and diving team, and recently competed in the state diving championships. Hull is the captain of Deer Park’s girls cross-country, winter track and spring track teams.

The Suffolk Zone Chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance annually honors the top male and female physical education students in each Suffolk County high school graduating class. The criteria include attainment of at least a 3.0 or B overall grade point average, an A or 90 in physical education and health classes, outstanding character in both classroom and school, exceptional leadership in the school environment, and status as a physical fitness role model for other students.
