Ahead of Storm, Locals Remember 1978 Blizzard
Storm hit Long Island 35 years ago this week.
High wind gusts, white-out conditions and over a foot of snow. It might sounds very familiar but this was the forecast for a snow storm that hit the Northeast 35 years ago this week when from Feb. 5 through Feb. 8 back in 1978 a blizzard blanketed the area.
There’s even a website dedicated to it and it has its own Wikipedia page.
Those old enough to remember it recall snowdrifts covering automobiles and days stuck indoors. (No Internet and for many, no cable television either. How did we survive?)

We asked on Facebook page if people remembered the blizzard of 1978 and here’s what they told us:
Dora Baldasare Cestaro: It was a really bad year. I remember my mother saying to me...u better have that baby in this snow storm we will have to deliver it at home.. Lol I held out until the 1st of march and the day I brought my beautiful little girl home there was another storm.....uuuuggggg remember, no infant car seats necessary in those days so off we went with baby in arms in front seat of a mustang with aunt Lucy behind the wheel....that was scary.

Katie Gennaro-Mauro: No I was 2 months old but apparently it was the weekend of my christening at St. Cyril's
Donna Miller Blanshan: 1978 storm. Lived in lower level split. Had to take out door window from inside to spoon out snow to get out of apt. Drift was so high we couldn't get out. Lol
Ellen McCarry Hopps: Yes I do. I even have a photo framed in the living room of my then 2 year old daughter in a snow playpen, made after my husband shoveled out our patio.
Loretta Selkirk: Quite well. I dragged the two children up twenty three blocks to the Deli to get milk and back, on a sled.
Michele Calderon: I was brought home from the hospital in that storm
