Deer Park Students Celebrated The Holiday Season With Kindness, Music

John F. Kennedy Intermediate School students found creative ways to serve and high school musicians wowed the community in December.

DPHS orchestra holds winter concert

Deer Park High School presented its annual winter concert on Dec. 21 in front of an auditorium full of family and friends ready to savor the talented sounds of the chamber orchestra, directed by Kathryn Attard; the chorus, directed by Catherine Singer; and the wind ensemble, directed by Derek Schmelter. A highlight of the evening was a joint performance by the chamber orchestra and wind ensemble of the Christmas classic “Sleigh Ride” that closed out the concert and left the audience with a warm glow.

JFK Intermediate School gives back in the holiday season

Students at Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School found creative ways to serve the community during December.

The school’s student government, led by advisers Darlene Matulich and Christine Musachio, sold candy canes for Toys for Tots, raising over $400 and purchasing many toys to help put smiles on children’s faces on Christmas.

Meanwhile, five classes at JFK jointly sponsored a dog named Lambo from the Babylon Animal Shelter, collecting items that the shelter needed for Lambo’s care.

“We taught our classes the importance of giving back during the holiday season,” teacher Heather Buksa said.
