DEER PARK, NY — A 26-year old off duty police officer who was shot in the head on Saturday after he attempted to buy a car off social media has died from his injuries, NYPD confirmed on social media.
Adeed Fayaz, 26, of Deer Park, was pronounced dead on Tuesday, after remaining in critical condition, police said.
"It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of NYPD Police Officer Adeed Fayaz, a devoted public servant, husband, father, brother, and son," the post said. Fayaz had traveled to Ruby Street in East New York, Brooklyn on Saturday evening, to buy a Honda Pilot from the man, identified as Randy Jones, Chief of Detectives James Essig said at a press conference Tuesday morning.
The arrangement took place over Facebook marketplace, Essig said. Fayaz's brother-in-law accompanied him in a separate car, he said.

When the Jones met them, he led them to a Ruby Street driveway and asked "are you guys carrying a gun."
Then Fayaz and his brother-and-law said no, Essig said.
Jones then grabbed Fayaz in a headlock, pointed a gun at his head, and demanded money. When Fayaz said he didn't have money, Jones pointed the gun at Fayaz's brother-in-law, Essig said.
Fayaz then broke free from the headlock and Jones shot Fayaz in the head, Essig said.
Jones fled the scene in a black vehicle.
Essig said that detectives were able to take a description of Jones and the black car's license plate through video surveillance. Fayaz's brother-in-law's car was also equipped with a dashboard camera, which helped the investigation.
Officers, in partnership with the U.S. Marshall's Office, were able to track Jones to a hotel Nanuet, New York. He was placed into custody in Rockland County on Monday night, and was taken to Brooklyn, where he remains in custody.
Essig confirmed that Jones was arrested using Fayaz's own handcuffs.
Fayaz, who is married and has two children, remained in critical condition and was "fighting for his life" at Brookdale University Hospital, Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said.
He was pronounced dead Tuesday afternoon, the NY Post said. The New York Police Benevolent Associaion honoredFayaz on social media, with a post that read "R.I.P. P.O. Adeed Fayaz."
Newsday reported he resides in Deer Park.
"New Yorkers, we are in this together," she said. "The victim in this case is an NYPD officer. We will relentlessly pursue anyone who carries an illegal firearms or shoots someone in this city. "
Jones is expected to be charged at a later time, Sewell said.
