Man Steals Car At Gunpoint, Rams Into Suffolk Police Vehicle: Cops

The man pointed a handgun at the driver as she pulled into her driveway, police say.

WHEATLEY HEIGHTS, NY — A man was arrested and charged Tuesday night after he stole a car at gunpoint and then rammed the car into the side of a marked police vehicle in Wheatley Heights, Suffolk County police said.

At about 11 p.m., Kwaisi McCorvey, 21, approached a 2016 Hyundai Tuscan that pulled into a driveway on Main Avenue, near Sunset Avenue, police said. He pointed a handgun at the driver, told her to get out of the vehicle, and drove off, police said.

Patrol officers in a marked police vehicle located the Hyundai about 10 minutes later at the intersection of Straight Path and Burr’s Lane in Wyandanch.

Officers activated lights and siren and followed the Hyundai to North 23rd Street, near Merritt Avenue, where McCorvey rammed the vehicle into the passenger side of the patrol car, police said.

McCorvey continued driving for about three more blocks before exiting the vehicle and fleeing on foot onto nearby Long Island Railroad tracks.

Officers pursued McCorvey on foot, apprehending him at about 11:37 p.m, police said.

McCorvey was charged with first-degree robbery, first-degree criminal use of a firearm, third-degree grand larceny, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, second-degree menacing,
third-degree criminal mischief, two counts of second-degree reckless endangerment, reckless driving and unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, police said.

He was held overnight at the First Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Wednesday.
