Police: Smell of Booze Leads To Arrest

North Babylon resident Robert Shank apprehended Friday morning while parked on Ocean Parkway and charged with DWI.

A North Babylon man was arrested east of Gilgo Beach just after midnight Friday and was changed with driving while intoxicated, New York State police said.

According to police, Robert Shank, 47, was spotted by troopers parked in a gold Toyota on the eastbound shoulder of Ocean Parkway. Upon speaking with Shank, state troopers on the scene said they detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage.

Police said troopers also noticed that Shank allegedly had glassy, watery and bloodshot eyes. He failed sobriety tests and a breath sample returned a .18 blood alcohol level. The legal blood alcohol level in New York is 0.08.
