Thursday's Events: What's Happening Locally

Compost cakes in North Babylon and a comedy in Deer Park highlight a busy day.

It’s Thursday, and there’s a great deal happening in Deer Park and North Babylon. On this day in American history the American Revolution began in 1775 and 86 years later the first blood was shed in the Civil War.

Locally, things are much more peaceful.

Over at the the celebration of Earth Day moves in a slightly different direction with the making of compost cakes beginning at 7 p.m. Composting is nature's process of recycling decomposed organic materials into a rich soil known as compost. Celebrate Earth Day by creating a cake that looks just like compost, but tastes like delicious cake, candy, pretzels and frosting. Yum!

Movie buffs can head to the at 1 p.m. to enjoy the 2011 comedy Tower Heist, which stars Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy. The film is about a group of hard working guys who find out they've fallen victim to a wealthy businessman's Ponzi scheme, and then conspire to rob his high-rise residence. Hilarity ensues.

Sports fans have an opportunity to cheer on some local teams this afternoon. At the Bulldogs take on Half Hollow Hills East in varsity baseball. First pitch is at 4 p.m. Girls varsity lacrosse action takes center stage at as the Falcons welcome Center Moriches. Game time is 4:30.
