Here are the top three stories today in Ditmas Park-Flatbush:

  1. East Flatbush came in as the second most dangerous neighborhood for car crashes in 2021, registering a total of 2,418, with fourth-most injuries and fatalities. Councilmember Rita Joseph has spoken about making street safety in the district a priority. (Streetsblog New York)
  2. Brooklyn may be the only borough in the city to see an increase in property taxes for small landlords, according to last-minute reforms proposed by De Blasio last week. The tax increase could particularly effect the owners of high market-value brownstones and row houses, but there's the possibility of exemptions for homeowners with low or limited incomes. For the upcoming year the Homeowner Assistance Fund opened yesterday. (Brooklyn Paper)
  3. Mayor Adams announced that public schools would remain open throughout the Omicron surge, stating in an interview that "calmness is competency," and saying that schools are a safer place for students than their home community. Ditmas Park and Flatbush have seen an average of 257 daily cases over the past week. (NYC Patch)
