87-Year-Old Man Hit And Killed By Taxi Cab, Police Say

The man was crossing East Fifth Street on Sunday night when he was fatally struck, police said.

EAST VILLAGE, NY — An 87-year-old man was killed Sunday night when a yellow taxi cab fatally struck him as he crossed East Fifth Street near Cooper Square, police said.

The man, who police have not yet identified, was walking on East Fifth Street when the cab, which was traveling south on Cooper Square, hit him, according to authorities. Officers responded to a 911 call at about 9 p.m. on Sunday night, and transported the man to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The cab driver, a 47-year-old man, remained on scene after the crash, the NYPD said in a statement. Authorities are still investigating the collision and the cab driver was not immediately arrested on Sunday night, police said.
