Man Found Dead Near East River, Authorities Say

An unidentified man was found dead near the river in the East Village on Tuesday morning, police said.

EAST VILLAGE, NY — Police found a man's body near the East River on Tuesday morning, hours before Macy's annual Fourth of July fireworks show was set to launch from the river.

Officers found the man's body lying on the rocks near the river near East Sixth Street and FDR Drive on Tuesday morning, an NYPD spokeswoman told Patch. The man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, was not immediately identified by authorities, but the spokeswoman said he was believed to be about 40 years old.

Police did not immediately know how the man died, or how he came to be in the river. The city's medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

Five giant barges will be parked in the East River for the fireworks show on Tuesday night, between 23rd and 41st streets.
