Pastrami Sandwich Shop Harry & Ida's Will Close In The E Village

East Village sandwich shop Harry & Ida's will close Nov. 25, the owners announced on Instagram.

EAST VILLAGE, NY — Harry & Ida's Meat and Supply Co. sandwich shop will close, the owners announced on Instagram.

Owners Will and Julie Horowitz said late last week, "we are heartbroken to announce that we will be closing up shop at the end of the month."

"We have so loved being part of your community, your celebrations, your lunches, your dinners, and your hearty snacks in between," they said in an Instagram post.

"As painful as it is, we are proud to go out on a high note with the shop busier than ever, our pastrami still holding strong on top national lists and the support of you, our beloved customers."

The sandwich shop on Avenue A near East 12th Street is set to close Nov. 25.

The sibling duo became known for their famed pastrami sandwich — but hinted at less meat and more vegetarian dishes in the future, a more sustainable approach compared to resource-intensive meat options.

Chef Will Horowitz recently created a carrot hot dog, which involves curing the vegetable for several days at a time, according to the New York Times. He's also come up with meat-replacements like smoked watermelon ham and prosciutto radish, Gothamist reported this summer.

They'll keep focus on Ducks Eatery, at 351 E. 12th St., once Harry & Ida's, the chef told Eater about its closure.

"I think that's the direction for us: Keep a small restaurant and develop more sustainable [foods]," Will Horowitz told Eater.

Scaffolding that was up for nearly two years when it first opened didn't help the location's financial situation either, according to Eater. Plus, a Financial District lunch spot of Harry & Ida's closed after less than a year in business.

"While our presence on Avenue A will come to an end, we will be carrying on the H&I name with some exciting projects on the horizon," the owners added. "Be on the lookout for our usual array of quirky, cured and smoked products, with a little more plant and a lot less meat this time around." Harry & Ida's did not immediately respond for comment.
