Baker's Pizza at 201 Avenue A is closing, according to its owner. But there might be a chance at a reopening under new ownership.

EAST VILLAGE, NY — A popular East Village pizzeria unexpectedly closed its doors over the last few weeks.

The owner of Baker's Pizza at 201 Avenue A confirmed on Instagram that the joint was not reopening under his ownership.

"New owner might be reopening but probably changing the branding and the name," Baker's Pizza wrote on Instagram after a user asked if the pizzeria was staying open. "I'm done!"

Baker's Pizza first opened in 2016 and quickly grew in popularity due to its sizable pizzas.

The pizzeria also served up signature pesto knots, zeppole bites, salads, and meatball sandwiches.

News that the East Village spot was closing inspired passionate responses.

"But wait a minute, I'm crying, aren't you re-opening on Avenue A," a person on Instagram asked. "You were finally the one, the real best pizza shop at that location, ever. No joke."

Baker's Pizza responded only with, "Thank You!"
