Valentine's Day Rally Organized Outside City Hall
Opponents of a proposal to turn part of an abandoned East Village school into college dorm rooms are gathering outside City Hall on Tuesday.

EAST VILLAGE, NY — Protestors opposing a plan to turn an abandoned East Village school into college dorms are organizing a Valentine's Day protest at City Hall on Tuesday.
The school, P.S. 64 at 605 E 9th St., hasn't been used to educate students in decades and started function as a community center in the 1970s. Now, developers have submitted proposals to turn in the building into a dorm for college students. The city has yet to decide whether to lease out part of the building to Adelphi University to house college co-eds.
Supporters of the community center who opposing converting the space into dorm rooms are gathering outside City Hall on Tuesday at 2 p.m.

"Join us to ask Mayor de Blasio to be our Valentine, stop the City from cheating on the neighborhood with developer Gregg Singer and deny any building permits for former CHARAS El Bohio, P.S. 64 at 605 East 9th Street!" organizers wrote on the event's Facebook page.
Manhattan borough president Gale Brewer and City Councilwoman Rosie Mendez are both expected to speak at the rally.
