Here are the top stories in East Hampton today:

  1. A Northampton man, Jose Hernandez, 39, turned himself in to the Southampton Town Police and was charged with first-degree rape and endangering the welfare of a child, police said. The investigation of the 2017 case, claiming Hernandez engaged in sexual conduct with a child under the age of 17, led to his arrest, police said. (Southampton Patch)
  2. If you have a student loan with Navient, you are in luck. New York Attorney General Letitia James announced that Navient loan company has been ordered to pay back more than $1.7 billion in debt cancelation nationwide for deceptive practices, including $110 million to around 4,300 New York student borrowers. If you will have your loans canceled, you will receive a notice from Navient by July 2022, authorities said. Refunds on any payments of the canceled loans made after June 30, 2021, will also be refunded. No action is required from loan borrowers to receive these funds. (Smithtown Patch)
  3. The Riverhead mother of a 4-year old girl critically injured in a Flanders crash Thursday was arrested and charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs, police said. Amy Wesolowski, 34, was driving a 2005 Toyota RAV4 with her daughter, Gracelyn Perkowski, 4, when the car collided with a 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan driven by Sonya Fezza, 29, of Water Mill, police said. Wesolowski was arrested and charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs, a misdemeanor, endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor, and aggravated DWI with child, a felony, and was held for morning arraignment, police said.
