Here are the top stories today in East Hampton:
- Unwelcome By Design In Tesla Territory. It was predictable that just as the first Tesla electric car-charging station appeared in East Hampton Village people would grumble, and grumble they did, with good reason. The new units popped up almost overnight in a village-owned parking lot on Osborne Lane. On one side is the Long Island Rail Road tracks, on the other a lovely old building used for village offices. For sure, the chargers appear incongruous, to put it mildly, but there is much more to the complaints than that. (East Hampton Star)
- Shinnecock Members Create New Land Trust To Take Possession Of Protected Grave Site. In Shinnecock Hills, members of the Shinnecock Graves Protection Warrior Society have announced the creation of the Niamuck Land Trust, a nonprofit organization designed to help acquire and protect burial grounds and other sites that are culturally significant to the Shinnecock Nation and neighboring indigenous communities. The organization will be modeled after the Peconic Land Trust, which partnered with Southampton Town earlier this year to buy a parcel atop Sugar Loaf in Shinnecock Hills that is considered the tribe’s most sacred burial ground.
- American Hotel Barman's "One Millionth Drink," A Martini, Raises A Bundle For Local Food Pantry. Recently, just steps outside the theater’s Green Room bar, the cinema hosted a live auction of what was believed to be the barman’s millionth cocktail. At the bartender’s suggestion, they announced that the proceeds would go to benefit the Sag Harbor Community Food Pantry — and that the drink of choice would be a martini. Stirring a generous pour of Belvedere vodka into a shaker glass full of ice, the bidding started at $20. It quickly rose from there. One hundred. Five hundred. A thousand. With additional cash donations from the evening, the local pantry received a total contribution of $9,194. (sagharborexpress.com)
