East Hampton Man Taken for $19K While Trying to Get Help on Immigration Case

The East Hampton Town and Village police departments reported the following incidents for the week of Oct. 21:

East Hampton

• An East Hampton resident went to police after he was swindled for a total of $19,000 from someone claiming to be an immigration attorney who could help him with a pending case. The victim sent the man money in payments, starting in October 2012, but never saw any results.  

• About $85 in cash was reported stolen from inside the locker room at East Hampton High School on Sept. 17. About $25 was taken from a bag in one of the unlocked lockers, and $60 was taken from a bag outside of a locker.

• While online at the Chase Bank drive-thru, off of Main Street, a man said a woman started to yell at him for cutting her off on Oct. 16 at about 11:45 a.m. She then kicked his driver's side mirror. There was no damage, but the man wanted the incident on record. 

Montauk

• A 2008 Tahatsu outboard motor, worth $1,500, was reported stolen from a vessel on South Lake Drive on Oct. 12 between 5 and 7:15 p.m.

• An employee with the East Hampton Town Parks Department reported that someone drove their vehicle through the gates on Soundview Drive, causing about $130 in damage, on the night of Oct. 12.

Wainscott

• An iPad mini that was reported stolen from a house on Hedges Lane in Wainscott was returned to the owner thanks to some high-tech software. The security device software notified the owner that the iPad had been turned on Oct. 12 at about 4 p.m. and then quickly turned off, but not before it snapped a picture of the suspect.
