'Emotionally Disturbed Person' Sparks Police Response At LI Home: PD

Emergency responders flooded the area in Montauk after a man was believed to be having a psychiatric emergency in a home with weapons: PD.

MONTAUK, NY β€” An "emotionally disturbed" person sparked an emergency response in Montauk Friday, police said.

According to East Hampton town police, at 11:43 a.m., a call came in from Suffolk County's DASH crisis center, about an adult male possibly having a psychiatric emergency at a home on Edgemere Road in Montauk.

Information was developed regarding numerous weapons in the house; DASH, police and family members could not make contact with the man, authorities said.

East Hampton police said they established a wide perimeter, closing surrounding roadways and clearing nearby residences.

EHTPD detectives, the East Hampton and Southampton Town emergency services unit teams, and New York State police investigators attempted numerous times to contact the man and ascertain his well-being in the location for several hours, police said.

A command post was established at the Montauk Fire Department, and one incoming Long Island Rail Road train to Montauk was held at the station in Amagansett, police said.

Eventually, the man made contact with family members, and responded to police commands, officials said. The situation ended peacefully, with no injuries reported, police said.

The man was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital for further evaluation, police said.
