LONG ISLAND, NY — Tropical Storm Henri made landfall along the coast of Rhode Island early Sunday afternoon, sparing Long Island from destructive winds and major storm surge flooding.

Only 730 PSEG Long Island customers were without power as of 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Just 48 hours ago, authorities had warned of wind impacts similar to Hurricane Irene, which caused nearly a half-million outages on the island.

A tropical storm warning remains in effect for the island, but a storm surge warning has been canceled.

Flash flooding from heavy rain will remain the serious concern through Monday. A flash flood warning is in effect until 7:15 p.m. Sunday in Nassau County. Massapequa and Great Neck had recorded nearly 4 inches of rain by 1:45 p.m., tops in the county.

A flood watch is in effect for all of the island until 8 p.m. Monday.

"The wind threat, storm surge threat, and tornado threats continue to rapidly diminish," the National Weather Service says. "The threat of very rough seas, high surf, and and dangerous rip currents continues at the ocean beaches."

On the forecast track, Henri is expected to slow down further and possibly stall near the Connecticut-New York border Sunday night, with an east-northeastward motion across northern Connecticut and southern Massachusetts expected Monday.
