Man Charged With Felony DWI In Montauk: Police

He was arrested Friday night, police say.

MONTAUK, NY β€” A Montauk man was arrested and charged with felony driving while intoxicated Friday night, police said

According to East Hampton town police, Christopher Ryder, 63, was arrested at 8:50 p.m. on Montauk Highway in Montauk and charged with felony DWI, with a previous conviction within 10 years.

Police said Ryder was driving a green 2001 Ford on Montauk Highway near Beech Street when he was observed failing to keep right and crossing over the solid double yellow line into the opposite lane of traffic; crossing over the solid white fog line onto the westbound shoulder; and having no operable plate lamps after sunset in total darkness. He also had an insufficient turn signal, less than 100 feet when making a right turn into a public parking lot, police said.

Ryder had the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, bloodshot and glassy eyes, slurred speech, and was unsteady on his feet; he also performed poorly on all standardized field sobriety tests administered, police said.

He was released on his own recognizance, police said.
