SKOLNICK Completes Expansion of East Hampton Library Young Adult Room
SKOLNICK Architecture + Design Partnership announces the completion of the expanded Young Adult Room at the East Hampton Library.
East Hampton, NY – August 13, 2024– SKOLNICK Architecture + Design Partnership is excited to announce the completion of the expanded Young Adult Room at the East Hampton Library. Led by Lee Skolnick, FAIA, Principal and project managed by Scott Briggs, AIA, Associate Principal, this project continues the firm's long-standing relationship with the library, following the Children’s Reading Room expansion in 2014 and the renovation of the original Young Adult Room in 2016. The expanded Young Adult Room opened to the public on June 15, 2024.
Due to its immense popularity and an increase in young patrons utilizing the current space, SKOLNICK was asked to renovate an adjoining stacks area to accommodate the teens. The new space continues the nature-inspired design of the original with a sophisticated mix of wood and neutral tones from the original YA Room design scheme. Curved millwork elements, ceiling cutouts, a suspended and lighted sculptural ceiling element, and the continuation of a carpeted “pathway” from the adjacent room provide fluidity and reinforce the connection between the existing space and the new addition.
A smart board will allow video presentations and team collaboration on school projects. Display walls for artwork, book storage, numerous charging stations for phones and laptops, and colorful, moveable seating round out this comfortable environment for group study and individual reading.

Briggs explained the project's evolution: "The room extends the nature-inspired design we created for the original YA space, with a flexible layout and sophisticated yet playful elements."
Despite budget constraints and a tight timeline, the project was completed efficiently. "We worked directly with the library’s general contractor, Ben Krupinski Builders, and sourced alternative furniture to meet the budget," Briggs noted.

The expanded Young Adult Room aims to enhance the library’s role as a community hub. "It’s a thoughtfully designed space for teens to read, study, and work on projects, providing a comfortable and safe environment after school and on weekends. We hope the new YA expansion will continue to serve its young patrons for a long time to come," said Briggs.
SKOLNICK looks forward to continuing their collaboration with the East Hampton Library and contributing to the community's evolving needs.
