Fire Safety Sparks Curiosity and Courage at Woodhull School

The Ocean Beach Fire Department recently visited Woodhull School in the Fire Island School District to teach students about fire safety

Autumn marks fire safety season across New York State, a time dedicated to teaching essential skills for staying safe during emergencies. Recently, Chief George Hesse and members of the Ocean Beach Fire Department brought that mission to life during a special visit to Woodhull School in the Fire Island School District.

Students were captivated as firefighters shared real-life stories, demonstrated safety techniques and emphasized the importance of respecting fire and knowing how to respond if one occurs. They shared the clear and empowering message that awareness and preparedness save lives.

Fire officials also encouraged families to practice fire safety at home. Holding fire drills at least twice a year, reviewing exit routes, choosing a designated meeting spot and showing children what firefighters look like in full gear can significantly reduce fear during real emergencies. When children understand that the firefighter in a mask is a trusted helper and not a stranger, they are more likely to remain calm and follow instructions.

The highlight of the visit came when students had the opportunity to explore Ocean Beach’s newest fire truck, 3-20-4. Climbing aboard, examining ladders and hoses, and peppering firefighters with questions, the children gained a firsthand look at the tools and teamwork behind emergency response. The experience left them with a deeper appreciation for the community heroes who work every day to keep them safe.
