Police ID Woman Who Drowned In Fire Island During Storm

The 67-year-old is believed to have drowned in rough water during the unexpected storm Sunday afternoon.

OCEAN BEACH, NY – A woman drowned off Fire Island during Sunday afternoon's thunderstorms, Suffolk Police said.

Marine Bureau officers responded to the Seaview Marina in Ocean Beach at about 3:40 p.m. after a 911 caller reported finding a body floating in the water near the shore.

The caller went into the water on a paddle board and kept the woman floating until officers arrived on scene.

Officers were able to pull the woman, whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, into the boat on the paddle board and transported her to Marine Bureau headquarters at Timber Point where she was pronounced dead.

The woman is believed to have drowned in rough waters due to a storm.
