Atlantic Beach Spent $1.5M on Sandy Repairs

The mayor of Atlantic Beach said that the village will come close to breaking even with FEMA reimbursements after spending about $1.5 million to repair its beaches and boardwalk following Superstorm Sandy.

Stephen Mahler told the Nassau Herald that surplus money was used for the repairs and cleanup, including clearing debris and sand and reconstructing the more than 80-year-old boardwalk with a new foundation and support posts. The mayor credits Village Building Inspector Steve Cherson with documenting the damage to send to FEMA right after the storm.

Atlantic Beach is also considering turning its once-popular tennis center into a community center with activities such as pilates and yoga, Mahler told the Herald. These ideas will be discussed at the village’s next trustees' meeting on Aug. 12 at 7:45 p.m.
