Local Teen Recites Thousands Of Digits Of Pi For Record Attempt

A Hewlett High School junior knows between 2,500 and 3,000 digits of the famous number, celebrated this week with its own holiday.

HEWLETT, NY — 3.14159: Can you recite any more digits of the number pi? One Hewlett High School junior can, and this week he will make an attempt to crack the world record of the top 50 longest recitations ever. Pi Day was celebrated this week, on Monday, March 14, in honor of the beginning of the famous number, which is the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter.

Anthony Ginzburg, 16, can tell you a few more of those digits...possibly over 3,000 of them. Last year, he recited 2,500 digits of pi from memory, his lifetime record, which nabbed him the rank of 81st in the world.

This Wednesday, at 2 p.m., he will once again take the stage at Hewlett High for a world record attempt. He began practicing in February, according to a news release, and has been a pi enthusiast since the sixth grade, when a teacher assigned an extra credit opportunity to memorize some of the digits.
