Here are the top three stories today in Five Towns:

  1. A 26-year-old man was stabbed in a Valley Stream home after midnight on New Year's Day. At a Melrose Street residence, Reyesun Watson, 18, of Brooklyn, had a verbal altercation with a victim that led to the stabbing. (Patch)
  2. Most Long Island school districts returned to in-person learning on Monday after holiday breaks, but a few moved to remote learning. Freeport, Westbury, Hicksville and Wyandanch districts went remote on Monday, and Long Beach and Baldwin chose some schools to switch to virtual learning, as omicron continues to surge.   3. Valley Stream resident Maribel Padin-Canestro, 51, was voted LI Herald's Person of the Year for 2021 in Valley Stream. During the pandemic she worked with State Senator Todd Kaminsky and his staff to secure and schedule vaccine appointments for dozens of elderly and vulnerable residents in Valley Stream. (LI Herald)
