Once-Polluted Site Near JFK Gains Preliminary Approval For Overhaul

The Inwood warehouse is expected to create 50 construction jobs.

HEMPSTEAD, NY — Preliminary approval has been granted for a warehouse to be built at a once-polluted site near JFK Airport.

The Town of Hempstead Industrial Development Agency (IDA) announced the package of economic benefits to AIREF JFK IC LCC, an affiliate of a Los Angeles-based realtor. It intends to spend $48 million for the 68,000-square-foot property in Inwood, the IDA said.

Located at 175 Roger Ave. and 41 Cerro St., on the site of the former Rockaway Metals, the warehouse takes up 3.68 acres.

AIREF intends to demolish a single-family home on Cerro Street to complete the project, the IDA said.

The site will contain 68 parking stalls, with two spots for electric vehicle charging. Fifty construction jobs and 12 permanent positions are expected.

"This project, should it obtain final approval, will transform a long-blighted property into productive use, an active employment center, and return it to the tax rolls," said Frederick Parola, Chief Executive of the Town of Hempstead Industrial Development Agency.

The project is subject to further review by the IDA, a public hearing, and a final authorizing
resolution.
