Shark Sighting; Swimming Paused In Hewlett: Town Of Hempstead

HEWLETT BAY, NY — There was a shark sighting on Thursday afternoon at Hewlett Point Beach, the Town of Hempstead wrote on X.

The beach was "red-flagged," keeping everyone out of the water for at least an hour.

"Our highly skilled lifeguards are on alert and will continue to monitor the waters," the tweet said.

No details were given about the shark's size or how close it ventured to the shore.

On Monday, a seven-foot shark was spotted in Lido Beach.

The state has stepped up shark patrols, including drone surveillance on the south shore.
