Local Teamsters Stand Up Against Amazon Warehouse In Freeport
State Attorney General Letitia James filed a lawsuit to halt the commercial property from being built on park space.
FREEPORT, NY — A local union is praising state Attorney General Letitia James for filing a lawsuit seeking to halt an Amazon warehouse from getting built at a Freeport park.
Teamsters Joint Council 16 said the project would destroy Cleveland Park.
"Attorney General James is standing up for the working families of Long Island, who need good jobs and safe streets to raise their kids, not another low-road e-commerce warehouse," Thomas Gesualdi, President of Teamsters Joint Council 16, said in a statement.

Last month, the Village of Freeport voted to rezone Cleveland Park for industrial use, and sell it to Panattoni Group, a frequent developer of Amazon warehouses, according to the Teamsters.
The union joined community members opposing a bill passed by the state legislature that would allow the sale and urged Gov. Hochul to veto it.

"Cleveland Park has been used by generations of little leaguers and is the only nearby greenspace for this community of color," Gesualdi said.
