Roosevelt Summer Enrichment Program Blends Education, Culture and Creativity

District's PPS Program Has a Successful Summer of Dance, STEM, Culinary Arts and More

The Roosevelt School District brought learning to life through its Summer Enrichment and Extended School Day Program, operated by the Department of Pupil Personnel Services. Designed for students with Individualized Education Programs, the program meets summer school requirements while offering a vibrant curriculum of STEM, culinary arts, adaptive physical education, swimming, dance, and more.

The program, coordinated by Ms. Timara Manns, is tailored to ensure that each student’s IEP mandates are met while also fostering an engaging, inclusive environment. Staff have seen how the enrichment program plays a crucial role in developing students' social skills and confidence.

One highlight of this summer’s program was a performance choreographed by long-time dance instructor Baba Obediah Wright, who has been an integral part of the summer initiative for years. This year’s theme, Cowboys and Quincy, explored the cultural intersections of Western heritage and Black artistry by drawing inspiration from both the historical contributions of Black cowboys and the modern impact of Beyoncé’s country album “Cowboy Carter.”

“Our Rough Riders took the stage to honor the legacy, spirit, and rhythm of the Cowboy of Color through powerful movement, music, and dance,” said Dr. Dionne Wynn, Director of Pupil Personnel Services. “This performance is a beautiful example of how arts education can uplift and empower our students.”

Wright curated a unique blend of movement and music that not only educated students about their heritage but also gave them a voice through performance.

“We were doing some of the dances, so I found music that aligned with the concept,” Mr. Wright said. “I’d like to thank Dr. Wynn for continuously bringing me back to the students of this summer program and for the Herculean job she does each year providing this much-needed experience.”

Roosevelt’s the Summer Enrichment and Extended School Day Program stands as a shining example of how specialized services, creativity, and cultural awareness can combine to create transformative experiences for all students.
