Shot Fired; Loaded Gun Found During Nassau Traffic Stop: Police

FREEPORT, NY — Three men were arrested early Sunday in connection to a shot that was fired in Freeport, police said.

There was gunfire at approximately 2:30 a.m. in the vicinity of Main Street and Leonard Avenue, police said.

A Freeport police officer observed a grey 2008 Honda CRV with dark-tinted windows fleeing the location at a high rate of speed, authorities said.

At a traffic stop, three people were in the vehicle. An investigation revealed one of the passengers, Jean Rodriguez, 24, had a loaded 9mm "ghost" handgun, police said. He was arrested without incident.

Dionny Quiroz, the 33-year-old driver, and Jostin Paez Vasquez, 21, were also arrested.

Quiroz was taken to a hospital for assessment.

The three men, all from Freeport, were charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, second-degree criminal use of a firearm, third-degree criminal use of a firearm and unlawful possession of a large capacity ammunition feeding device.

Rodriguez has an additional charge of first-degree reckless endangerment. He and Vasquez were scheduled to be arraigned on Monday, while Quiroz will be arraigned when medically practical.
