GARDEN CITY, NY — Adelphi University's College of Nursing and Public Health has been chosen to be one of a small handful of schools to be part of a new initiative to help train future nurse leaders.

The school was one of only 10 schools nationwide — and the only in New York — chosen by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) to participate in the initiative, designed to prepare the next generation of nurses with strong skills in the areas of leadership, resilience, self-care and well-being. The pilot program will kick off in the spring 2023 semester.

"This opportunity from AACN comes at a critical moment as we are experiencing a significant shortage in nursing staff and educators, all of which need to be prepared for a changing world," said Deborah Hunt, dean of Adelphi's College of Nursing and Public Health. "Being selected as one of the pilot schools is truly an honor and will provide us with the ability to network with our esteemed colleagues and access the resources required to prepare our next generation of nurses with skills and competencies in the areas of leadership, resilience, self-care, and well-being."

The AACN launched this initiative to help graduates develop the skills needed to foster personal health, resilience and well-being, as well as strong leadership skills. Adelphi was chosen to participate in a study to prepare nursing students and new nurses to deal with stress. The program will be led by Adelphi CNPH faculty members Marilyn Klainberg, PhD, and Deborah Ambrosio-Mawhirter, EdD, who nominated the University for this opportunity.

"Even before the impact of the COVID pandemic, it had been documented that nurses experience high rates of stress, which can lead to depression, anxiety and burnout," said Klainberg. "Due to these factors many experience unhealthy behaviors and these may impact one's resilience, sleep and diet. Most important is that these factors may have an impact on patient care."
