Grand Avenue School’s ‘Touch-A-Truck’ Enhances Student Learning

Hands-On Engagement With Community Vehicles

UNIONDALE, NEW YORK—Grand Avenue Elementary School recently partnered with the Town of Hempstead Parks and Recreation Department for an immersive Touch-A-Truck event, providing pre-K scholars with hands-on experience that aligned with their classroom curriculum.

In late October, a Town of Hempstead highway payloader, street sweeper, and dump truck—along with additional vehicles—arrived at the front of Grand Avenue Elementary School. Participating pre-K scholars engaged with the vehicles and learned about their functions from Parks and Recreation Department representatives. The project aligned nicely with the young scholars’ curriculum, as they had been learning about roads recently in their classes.

“Our students loved exploring the vehicles that help keep our community running every day,” said Grand Avenue School Principal Dr. Samantha L. Dias. “We are grateful to the Town of Hempstead Parks and Recreation Department for bringing this learning experience to life for our students.”
