GCHS Class of 1951 Honors its Football Captain

George Spellman, forever in the hearts of his family, always in the fond memories of all who knew him; when he left this world, he left it a better place because of him.

For years, "the guys" always felt that George should be honored publicly. George, a humble person, scoffed at the idea. However, after George's death the feelings became a reality when Walk Rykowski, called his old high school team mates, Lou Guadagni and Dean Scheu, to get the ball rolling on "doing something" for George.

Sixty years later, on June 29, 2011, in the presence of his widow, Wessie, his two sons, George and Glenn, extended family, and neighbors, George's classmates from his Class of 1951 gathered to honor George Spellman, their leader, football captain, and loyal friend. With , George's old friends dedicated a plaque and bench in , a favorite place where Wessie and George often relaxed.

Lou Guadagni spoke of George's leadership and dedication in sports: He always worked for perfection...always looking to improve...never satisfied with mediocrity. George is missed. He was a loving husband and father, a true and loyal friend -- aggressive when necessary, but with a gentle, kind heart -- always a gentleman! We miss him.
