Biden Border Executive Order Is 'Right Thing To Do': Suozzi
The president is expected to announce a drastic reduction in asylum seekers at the U.S./Mexico border, the congressman said.
WASHINGTON, DC — President Biden announced an executive order on Tuesday that would drastically reduce the number of asylum requests at the Mexico border.
"The president is saying, 'I hear you. I know this is an issue and I'm taking action," Congressman Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove) said on a conference call. "This is what people are talking about. They're very concerned about the border."
Suozzi was dissuaded during his campaign from focusing on the border crisis, out of concern that it was primarily a Republican issue, he said.

"It's an American issue," he said. "It's what people care about. I think the president is showing leadership here."
Biden's executive order would cap entry at ports of entry with 2,500 asylum seekers on average per day. It would reopen when the number drops to 1,500, the AP said.

A bipartisan measure earlier this year failed once former president Trump encouraged Republicans to back away from the deal.
"The president is taking this very strong, bold action," Suozzi said. "I think it's the right thing to do. I'm hoping there will be a new vigor for the Congress to do even more."
