Arrest Made In Fatal Glen Cove Hit-And-Run

The driver struck a pedestrian and fled the scene on Wednesday night, police say.

UPDATED Tuesday: The man fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver was identified as 72-year-old Glen Cove resident Jose Basurto, police say.

A Locust Valley woman was arrested for fatally striking a pedestrian in Glen Cove last week, Nassau Police announced on Monday.

Carol Cashman, 70, turned herself in to detectives and was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal automobile accident. She was arraigned on Monday.

According to authorities, 72-year-old Glen Cove resident Jose Basurto was crossing a pedestrian sidewalk near 21 Brewster St. and Dunkin' Donuts when he was struck by a light-colored BMW traveling northbound at 11:12 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 20. Police say the driver was a woman— who was later identified as Cashman— and she stayed at the scene for a brief time before driving away.

"The vehicle that left the scene suffered front end damage and possibly a broken front windshield," Glen Cove Det. Lt. John Nagle said in a press release.

Basurto suffered serious trauma and later died from his injuries at an area hospital.

Glen Cove Police and Nassau County Homicide Squad are investigating the incident.
