GLEN COVE, NY — Despite most of the needed equipment inaccessible and probably destroyed or badly damaged due to a storage unit fire last week, the Scott J. Beigel Memorial Fund held its 2nd annual Buckets 4 Beigel Basketball Tournament at North Shore Day Camp on Saturday.

The fund was created in response to the death of Scott J. Beigel, a former Long Island resident and the geography teacher and cross-country coach at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Beigel was struck by a bullet as he shut a classroom door behind him. He had unlocked his classroom briefly to let more students take shelter.

The fund provides scholarships to send at-risk, underserved children touched by gun violence to summer sleep-away camp.

Buckets 4 Beigel raises funds for the fund through an all-day round robin style tournament.

Participating camps included Tyler Hill, Timber Lake, Chen-O-Wanda, Pontiac, Trails End, Greylock, and Kennybrook. Families and friends cheered on the games throughout the day.

“I am proud to host Buckets 4 Beigel, where campers compete and raise funds for this noble cause,” said Jay Jacobs, owner of TLC Camps.

With the help of local businesses, Buckets 4 Beigel was able to go forward despite the fire, foundation officials said.

"My son Scott was a hero on that tragic Valentines Day in 2018. He sacrificed his life after saving the lives of 31 of his students," said Linda Beigel Schulman, co-founder of SJBMF. "The fund was created in his honor to change the lives of at risk, underserved children touched by gun violence, many of whom reside here on Long Island."
