Glen Cove Police Officer Derek M. Valance is marking a new milestone this month with the release of his debut children’s book, Through the Eyes of a Bear. The story follows a young bear on a meaningful journey—curious, brave, and determined to understand the world and its place within it. Through adventure, reflection, and perseverance, the bear learns that the path itself is often the greatest teacher.

A community launch event will take place on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, from 6 PM to 8 PM at THE SHOPPE by Trubee Hill, located at 100 Village Square in Glen Cove. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the author, hear about the inspiration behind the book, and purchase signed copies—just in time for holiday giving.

Officer Valance brings to this project a distinguished background of service. He is a former U.S. Navy SEAL and currently serves with the Glen Cove Police Department. In February 2024, he was honored as the recipient of the Tribute & Honor Foundation’s Impact Award in recognition of his service to both country and community. He and his brother, Owen Valance—also a Navy veteran and Glen Cove Police Officer—have twice completed the 22 PTSD Awareness Challenge, a 22-mile kayak journey across Long Island Sound, with fundraising efforts organized in collaboration with the Tribute & Honor Foundation, the Glen Cove Police Department, and community partners. He has also been formally recognized by the New York State Senate for his leadership and civic engagement and continues to serve as a mentor and advocate for programs supporting young people, veterans, and first responders.

The themes within the book—courage, exploration, and personal growth—reflect not only the spirit of the story but also the lived experiences of its author. The result is a book that encourages young readers to approach the world with curiosity, confidence, and heart.

Community members of all ages are invited to attend, support a local author, and celebrate this meaningful new creative chapter. Also, you can always bring along a young reader who may enjoy meeting the bear behind the story
