Homeless Man Gets 17 Years For Setting Man On Fire In Glen Cove

The man's injuries were so severe that doctors had to amputate his legs.

A homeless man was sentenced to 17 years on Friday for setting a man on fire in Glen Cove last year, according to Nassau District Attorney Madeline Singas.

German Umanzor, 39, pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted murder on October 10.

“To this day, German Umanzor’s victim endures pain and suffering from the injuries sustained in this brutal attack,” Singas said in a press release. “This lengthy prison sentence ensures this violent menace will be off our streets for a very long time.”

On Sept. 12, 2017, a homeless man was sleeping on the ground in a wooded area near the Glen Cove train station when Umanzor, an acquaintance who got into an argument with the man earlier in the day, intentionally started a fire next to his legs using a lighter and dry leaves around 6 p.m., the DA says.

Another acquaintance called 911, and officers responded to the area to find the man suffering from serious burns to both of his lower legs. The man was airlifted to Nassau University Medical Center to be treated for his injuries.
