Locust Valley Lacrosse Stuns Seaford

Locust Valley upsets Seaford, 11-7, in Nassau Class C boys lacrosse quarterfinal.

What a difference a week makes.

Just seven days ago, the Seaford boys lacrosse team delivered a decisive statement in an 11-5 win over Locust Valley. It was the regular season finale for the Vikings, who looked good in wrapping up the No. 3 seed in the Nassau Class C playoffs.

Seaford drew a familiar foe in Wednesday’s quarterfinal at Hofstra’s Shuart Stadium. But sixth-seeded Locust Valley looked nothing like the overmatched opponent the Vikings beat so handily in the regular season.

Locust Valley scored six straight goals to open the game en route to a stunning 10-7 upset of Seaford. It was the second straight quarterfinal loss for the Vikings (12-4).

“They played better. They played harder,” Seaford Coach Michael Corcoran said. “They deserved to win.”

Junior midfielder Louie Jokinsky scored the game’s first two goals to set the tone for the Falcons (6-10), who possessed the ball for much of the first half and took a 7-3 edge into intermission.

“This is a young team,” Falcons Coach Matt McFarland said. “We have six ninth graders and an eighth grader.”

Freshmen twins Mike and Joe Madsen each scored three times for Locust Valley.

Senior attack Danny Speicher got Seaford on the board with 5:38 left in the half. The Vikings closed the gap to 9-5 on senior attack Will Campion’s score with 7:57 left in the third.

“I thought we’d come back and win the game,” Corcoran said.

Campion finished with three goals, but it was not enough.

Locust Valley advances to the semifinals and will face No. 2 Friends Academy next Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Hofstra.
