Nassau Lawmaker Touts Septic Grant Program Offering Up To $20K
Homeowners and small businesses that discharge less than 1,000 gallons a day of wastewater are eligible to receive up to $20,000 in grants.
GLEN COVE, NY — Eligible property owners should take advantage of a grant program helping defray the cost of upgrading their septic systems, Nassau Legis. Delia DeRiggi-Whitton said Thursday.
Homeowners and small businesses that discharge less than 1,000 gallons a day of wastewater are eligible to receive up to $20,000 in grants toward the installation of modern, nitrogen-reducing septic systems from the county’s Septic Environmental Program to Improve Cleanliness, or SEPTIC, program.
The program was launched in April 2021 using millions in American Rescue Plan Act funding and state grant funds.

As of this January, 118 upgrades have been done, and more than $8 million awarded to fund around 400 nitrogen-reducing upgrades, according to the Nassau County Soil and Water Conservation District.
DeRiggi-Whitton said that protecting the water "is one of the best New Year’s resolutions we can pursue – and it is one that will pay dividends for future generations."

“It has been truly encouraging to see so many upgrades come to fruition, especially on the North Shore where this initiative is especially impactful," she said. "I strongly encourage any property owner who needs to replace an aging septic system to see if they are eligible to receive a grant through this program.”
