New York Islanders School Assembly Program Teaches Connolly Students

Hockey team hosts assembly on making smart decisions

GLEN COVE, NEW YORK (MARCH 2023) — Connolly Elementary School students recently dressed in their best blue and orange to cheer for local beloved hockey team the New York Islanders. But rather than watching the Islanders take the ice, students met with representatives from the Islanders School Assembly Program who discussed with them important lessons on living healthy and treating each other with kindness. The interactive assembly focused on smart decision-making, eating healthy, staying active through sports or exercise and treating others with respect.

“Connolly students were so excited for an assembly celebrating the Islanders and came away from it with important lessons imparted by the beloved hockey team,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Maria Rianna. “We are so grateful that the team gives back to local communities by encouraging children to make good decisions.”

Students were given the chance to take part in role-playing activities, try on an Islanders goalie uniform, ask questions and meet with Islanders mascot Sharky. One student faced off against a teacher in a race to put on a uniform the fastest, which the student won thanks to a little help from the Islanders representatives. The assembly is part of the District’s commitment to providing its young students with exciting and engaging opportunities that expand their knowledge and teach them invaluable lessons they can carry with them throughout their lives.
