NY Primary Election Results 2020: Suozzi Leading D'Arrigo

U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi faces Melanie D'Arrigo and Michael Weinstock in the Democratic primary.

LONG ISLAND, NY — U.S. Rep. Tom Suozzi held a commanding lead Wednesday morning over Melanie D'Arrigo and Michael Weinstock in the Democratic primary race for the 3rd Congressional District.

Suozzi's lead improved to 57 percent of the vote overnight with all precincts reporting. D'Arrigo was in second with 33 percent and Weinstock was in third with 8 percent. See vote totals below.

Suozzi is a former Glen Cove mayor and Nassau County executive. He's a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, the chamber's chief tax-writing committee. He also serves on the Oversight and Tax Policy subcommittees. His campaign did not fill out Patch's candidate questionnaire.

D'Arrigo, a Port Washington resident who worked for 14 years as an Allied Health professional, described herself in a Patch candidate questionnaire as a mom and organizer who supports universal health care and wants "bold" measures to combat climate change.

Weinstock, of Great Neck, is a former firefighter and prosecutor who said he wants to be a "fresh voice" who children can look up to. He pointed to "incredibly high" taxes as one reason many young people can't afford to live on Long Island.

In the Republican primary, George A. D. Santos, of Queens, is a financial professional who wants to take on "a radical regime," according to TheIslandNow.com. He did not fill out a Patch candidate questionnaire.

Bob Cohen and Howard Rabin are also on the ballot as third-party candidates this year, running on the Working Families Party and Libertarian lines, respectively.

Preliminary results for the Republican primary were not available Tuesday night.

The 3rd Congressional District includes the Nassau County municipalities of Port Washington, Great Neck, Manhasset, Roslyn Heights, East Hills, Sea Cliff, Glen Cove, Oyster Bay, Syosset, Jericho, Hicksville, Plainview and Bethpage. The district also includes the Suffolk municipalities of Melville, Huntington, Northport, Kings Park, and Commack, as well as the Queens communities of Little Neck, Glen Oaks and Whitestone.

The polls closed Tuesday night, but unofficial election results do not include absentee ballots, which still must be counted.

Absentee ballots must be postmarked by June 23 and received by the Board of Elections no later than June 30 to be counted, according to state election laws.
