SAFE Glen Cove Coalition: September is National Recovery Month

Recovery Month, started in 1989 by SAMHSA is a national observance to increase public awareness surrounding addiction recovery.

Recovery Month, started in 1989 by the Substance Abuse and Mental health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is a national observance held every September to increase public awareness surrounding addiction recovery, promote and support new evidence-based treatment and recovery practices, the nation’s strong and proud recovery community, and the dedication of service providers and communities who make recovery in all its forms possible. The month raises awareness for available treatment and recovery support services, encourages community participation, and seeks to reduce the stigma associated with seeking help. Various organizations, including SAMHSA, provide resources and support to communities to help individuals and families thrive in recovery.

This theme emphasizes that comprehensive recovery is possible and encourages a holistic approach to rebuilding one's life after mental health or substance use challenges and is an acronym that emphasizes the foundational pillars of recovery: health, home, community, and purpose.
