Tell Us: Breast Cancer Research Fundraising

As the end of Breast Cancer Awareness Month comes to a close next week, a significant portion of the $6 billion raised annually in the name of fighting the disease will have been raised through events across Long Island and the country.

A 2011 Marie Claire article raises the question of how trustworthy the fundraisers are (including businesses using the pink ribbon to promote possibly carcinogenic products like fast food).

With new cases of the disease affecting approximately 200,000 women per year, the mountain of money raised to fight the disease continues to grow without a corresponding drop in diagnoses.

Reader Daniel commented on a September call for research volunteers:

American Cancer Society is the greatest scam in the cancer business. what causes cancer? dont we already know? whats in our food. whats in our water. in our air, shampoos, tooth pastes, deodorants, medications,bottels... 
well all know it. i would love to help out, but honestly i dont believe that ACS has its heart in the right place.
