Duck Rides Subway

"I looked up to see that the white dog in the woman's arms was actually a duck."

BROOKLYN, NY — Subway rides in New York City these days don't offer much in the way of entertainment, mostly just angry shouts to the MTA gods for delayed trains and crowded cars.

A handful of riders, though, were recently treated to one of those moments of weirdness that can make rides slightly more tolerable.

A smartphone-wielding Gowanus resident got on board a G train in Williamsburg and saw a woman holding what he thought was a small white dog. Until it started quacking.

The woman was actually on board with her pet duck, who was on a leash and eventually started waddling around the cabin, quacking away.

He videoed the experience and put it on Instagram:

"I looked up to see that the white dog in the woman’s arms was actually a duck, a few feet from me," Maximillian Kirchoff, who goes by Max, Big Dude With The Beard on Instagram, told AM New York. "It quacked a bit more and she let him down to walk around the subway, on its leash."

(Patch has reached out to Kirchoff for more, and we'll let you know if we hear back.)

In the video, someone on the train inquires about the woman's fowl friend.

"He’s a pet," the woman behind the leash, whose face is not shown, says. "We got him when he was a chick."

City officials were quick to note that owning a pet duck in New York City is illegal.

So, officially: don't bring your duck on the train. Unofficially: we welcome anything that makes for a break from the mundanity that is the New York City subway system.
