GREAT NECK, NY — The Great Neck community is trying to rally around two families displaced in a building fire over the weekend. As Patch previously reported, arson and fire marshal investigators were looking into the blaze that swept through two Great Neck apartments Saturday afternoon on Middle Neck Road. The apartments were located above two store fronts near Beach Road.

By the time police officers arrived, both apartments were completely engulfed in flames and had sustained extensive damage. All residents were out of the apartment at the time and no injuries were reported.

The blaze left two families in the Great Neck Public Schools district displaced, living in temporary housing, according to a GoFundMe account create to raise money for the families. The children affected range from 3 to 16 years old.

"These two families have lost everything," the post said. "As is the case in many fires, a lot of property was destroyed by fire, smoke and/or water; these families need to start all over."

Damaged and destroyed items include everyday goods such as clothes, bedding, toiletries, kitchen items and school supplies.

"As a community, we can make huge difference in the lives of these children and their families when they need us the most" the post said. "Please donate. All donations received will be divided among the victims."

The crowdfunding campaign aims to raise $12,000. As of Friday, it had raised more than $10,000.

"If and when the monetary goal is achieved, we will put the extra money in a UPTC account that is specifically earmarked for community emergency use," the post said. "That way, should there be any other district families in similar need in the future, we will be able to access funds immediately."

GoFundMe has verified the campaign's authenticity.
