Crash Kills Man Holding Onto Hood Of Car; Driver Arrested: Police

BREAKING: A man has been charged with manslaughter in connection to the Nassau County crash.

Updated Tuesday at 12:20 p.m.:

A Great Neck man faces manslaughter charges after police say he was in a collision that killed a man who had jumped on the hood of his car in Manhasset on Friday.

According to authorities, Christian Arevalo, 19, was in a dispute with a Corey Howell, 20, of Great Neck, that eventually escalated and became physical at 8:43 p.m. Arevalo entered his mother’s 2013 Nissan Altima and drove from Manor Drive in Manhasset with Howell holding onto the motor hood of the car, police say.

Arevalo was involved in a collision a short time later with a 2017 Cadillac Sedan on Cumberland Avenue and then collided with a curb.

The collision caused Howell on the hood to be thrown off, striking his head on the pavement. He suffered head, neck and spine injuries.

Howell was transported by a Nassau County Police Ambulance to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased by hospital staff at 12:39 a.m. on Thursday.

Following an investigation, police say Arevalo was responsible for a robbery that occurred on Monday, July 17 in Great Neck. He also violated a court order of protection on Tuesday, May 5 in Great Neck, police say.

Arevalo was arrested and charged with second-degree manslaughter, second-degree robbery, first-degree criminal contempt, second-degree reckless endangerment and third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. He will be arraigned Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead.
