It's a beautiful spot in the heart of Great Neck.
A statue erected in honor of Jonathan Lee Ielpi stands in quiet vigil. The Great Neck firefighter, a member of Squad 288, responded when planes struck the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.
Ielpi, who also served as First Assistant Chief of Vigilant Fire Company, died when the South Tower collapsed.
The statue was dedicated Nov. 1, 2003. It's a stark reminder of the service and bravery shown by all first responders.
And it stands so no Great Neck resident will ever forget what took place -- heroic and cruel -- on 9/11.
