Intercollegiate Sailing Association Championships To Kick Off On LI

For the first time in more than 20 years, college students from all around the country are set to compete on Long Island.

KINGS POINT, NY — For the first time in more than 20 years, college students from all around the country are set to compete on Long Island this Memorial Day weekend.

The Intercollegiate Sailing Association’s (ICSA) spring national championships will take place at the Yocum Sailing Center in Kings Point, ending on June 2. It is hosted by the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA)

The championships kicked off on May 23, with the Women’s National semifinals championship and then the Women’s National Finals championship.

The Open Team Race national championship will start on Saturday, May 27 and end on Monday, May 29.

The association is the governing authority for sailing competition at colleges and universities throughout the United States and in some parts of Canada. There are seven Conferences that schedule and administer regattas within their established geographic regions.

This is the first time since 2000 that the USMMA has hosted the championships.

“We are very honored to host the 2023 College Sailing National Championship events at Kings Point," said Brendan Feeney, Assistant Director of External Relations at USMMA. "Our staff has worked countless hours to create an unprecedented event that will showcase our sport to viewers nationwide. Kings Point hosts numerous top-tier events throughout the season. The staff and resources here allow us to run events of this caliber efficiently.”

The Open National semifinals championship will take place from May 30 to May 31 and the Open National finals championship will finish from June 1 to June 2.

USMMA welcomes teams, fans, and parents to watch all championship events. Fans and parents can watch the competing sailors on the second floor Pavilion of the Yocum Sailing Center and along the sea wall.
