N. Hempstead To Add 30 Electric Vehicle Chargers In Town Parks

NORTH HEMPSTEAD, NY — Electric vehicle (EV) sales are up, but there are only eight public charging stations in the Town of North Hempstead, officials announced on Tuesday. Council members announced a plan to add more in several town parks dubbed "Power Up in a Park."

Sales of EVs have doubled nationwide this year, New York State Senator Anna Kaplan's office reported, but the Town of North Hempstead, with 231,000 residents, only has seven publicly available.

On Tuesday morning, Kaplan along with town council members Veronica Lurvey, Mariann Dalimonte and Peter Zuckerman, announced at Clinton G. Martin Park that the town will add 30 more level two chargers to seven parks.

"We hope this is a model of sustainability more towns on Long Island will follow," Lurvey said.

The chargers will be funded from a $500,000 grant Kaplan secured.

Shawn Brown is a local driver of an EV who spoke on Tuesday and he said the infrastructure in North Hempstead hasn't been enough for EV drivers.

"It's the future because it's here," he said.

The parks to get the chargers will be: Michael J. Tully in New Hyde Park, Clinton G. Martin in New Hyde Park, Town Dock in Port Washington, North Hempstead Beach in Port Washington, Mary Jane Davies Green in Manhasset, Yes We Can Center in Westbury, and Clark Botanic Garden in Albertson.
